How We Help

Through rehabilitation, we help the Staffie in need to overcome their past experience and prepare for the new happy life we are creating for them. We strongly believe this is achieved through positive reinforcement, lots of exercise, brain stimulation through play and enrichment feeding, a heap of belly scratches, and lots of kisses. This process will allow each Staffie to bond with their future family.

Through adoption, we ensure a Staffie in need gets a second chance in life with a family who understands the breed and their needs.

Through education & training, we hope to assist Staffie owners in keeping their dogs happy and stimulated.

REHABILITATE

Many dogs who come into our care need some soul work. This is mainly due to neglect and/or abuse.

Once we’ve spent a few days with a newly rescued dog, we – along with professional support from behaviourists, vets, physiologist or specialised vets, are able to establish their needs and address them one by one.

We are extremely proud to have a great network of professionals who support our cause and love the breed as much as we do. Please check out our “Set The Smiles Free” partners whom we recommend highly.

No doggy problem is too big! We aim to ensure a perfect fit for the staffie and the new family, and we accomplish this by being 100% transparent about the dog’s past. By knowing their past we can plan for their future and a happily ever after lifetime commitment.

ADOPTION

Our focus is 100% on the Staffie and its needs.

A homing will only happen if we feel that the family is the right match for the dog. Many things need to be taken into consideration for this to happen.

If you see a post about a Staffie in need on our social media, unfortunately it does not necessarily mean this dog is the right match, due to his needs, or your family’s.

Through a long process of personal talks and meetings, we aim to ensure that the match is indeed “made in heaven” so that from the day of adoption life is full of smiles on both sides.

The adoption process is not a quick one, usually 6 – 8 weeks as we are run entirely on a volunteer basis. All our volunteers have full-time jobs and offer up their free time to “Set The Smiles Free”.

Please read more on our adoption page.

EDUCATION

Our aim is to create awareness about this wonderful breed, their needs as well as how to deal with them. We want to ensure that each Staffie has a lifelong smile on their face.

Through a combination of qualified professionals, years of experience, dedicated volunteers, and a network of Staffie owners we are able to assist new adoptive pet parents with questions, concerns, advice, and a Knowledge Base of helpful information.

Friends of the Dog

Dealing with dogs that have behaviour problems is serious, and must be undertaken only by behaviourists that are properly qualified – incorrect modifications can result in the behaviour becoming worse, other behaviour problems developing, and damage to the relationship between dog and owner. This is especially important when it comes to any type of aggressive behaviour. In order to ensure that the people we recommend are of the highest quality, we only promote the services of behaviourists that have undertaken the necessary training at organizations that we recognize.
